The rock temples Mulkirigala
Mulkirigala
The rock temples in the town of Mulkirigala (north of Tangalle) lie off the usual tourist routes, so it's quite possible that you'll have the place entirely to yourself. Upon entering the complex, you will pass by the monks' quarters and climb the first staircase to the treasury. Here, you can purchase a ticket and begin exploring the local cave temples.
The site consists of several "levels," each featuring one or more caves, connected by staircases that will give you a bit of a workout. Climbing to the top is a pleasant warm-up, rewarded with a stunning view and a small chapel where a monk will tie a colorful thread around your wrist, accompanied by a local chant (in Sinhala, but beautiful to hear). The caves themselves are richly decorated, and you will find several statues of Buddha.
